Trauma surgery is a surgical specialty that focuses on the treatment and management of life-threatening injuries caused by impact forces. There are numerous causes of impact forces, but some of the more common ones are road accidents, falls, sports and crush injuries, and gunshot or knife wounds. Trauma surgeons are frequently part of a larger team of specialized surgeons such as orthopedic, maxillofacial, plastic (i.e. specialist for the reconstruction of body areas following) and neurosurgeons. Trauma surgery is a fast-paced and demanding specialty with little opportunity for the lengthy conversations seen in some medical consultations. Following the completion of a basic medical degree, the trauma surgeon often goes through training. In most countries, this training, together with the medical degree, can take a decade or more. Furthermore, in some countries, trauma surgeons may perform activities that would normally be performed by general surgeons. When paired with urgent general surgery, this profession is known as acute surgical care.
